Chess at Mr. Seghers

Pictures have been added in our photo album for the Chess Party we had last Saturday Jan 3. Click here to see them, or simply click on My Photo Album on the right and choose Chess Party.

It was a really fun event. We had 12 kids in the mini-tournament (counting Mr. Bartz!). Evan took first with 5 wins and Josh tied visiting Eric Rokni for 2nd place. Josh took 2nd on tie-breakers. Along with the mini-tournament, we also had an hour of instruction where Mr. Seghers went over Morphy's famous "Opera Game" <- click to see yourself or watch a youtube version of it below. The point of this instruction is that, while we focus so much on carefully building a structured game, and position, and material, sometimes it is good to remember there is NO PRICE too high to get that King! While a sacrifice is a concept that is advanced for most of our players, it's good to get a glimpse of a master with a method to his "madness."
