LDMS Flexes K-5 Muscles at St. Bernadette's

Our K-5 took First Place at St. Bernadette's large tournament in Milwaukee on Sat, Jan 17. Above is Kolt and Reid, who tied for first by going 5-0 !! Kolt took the first place trophy on tiebreakers. Playing for K-5 were Kolt, Reid, Rachel, Chris T, Josh, Chris M, and Jason. Chris did very well in his second tournament ever, winning 2.5 out of 5. Click here for full results.

Evan took First Place in the K-8 division, going 4.5 - 0.5 to tie with tough Gregory from Bay Lane. Unlike Reid, Evan took the tie-breaker over Gregory. Playing for K-8 were Evan and Jacob, who won 2 games in his second tournament and shows great promise as an up and coming player!
The pictures for this and all tournaments are on the online Photo Album, on the upper right hand side of this blog. Thanks! - Mark

Chess at Mr. Seghers

Pictures have been added in our photo album for the Chess Party we had last Saturday Jan 3. Click here to see them, or simply click on My Photo Album on the right and choose Chess Party.

It was a really fun event. We had 12 kids in the mini-tournament (counting Mr. Bartz!). Evan took first with 5 wins and Josh tied visiting Eric Rokni for 2nd place. Josh took 2nd on tie-breakers. Along with the mini-tournament, we also had an hour of instruction where Mr. Seghers went over Morphy's famous "Opera Game" <- click to see yourself or watch a youtube version of it below. The point of this instruction is that, while we focus so much on carefully building a structured game, and position, and material, sometimes it is good to remember there is NO PRICE too high to get that King! While a sacrifice is a concept that is advanced for most of our players, it's good to get a glimpse of a master with a method to his "madness."
